The 2011 ATLAS AGM & Social Weekend was held at the Low Wood Hotel on the shores of Lake Windermere on 2nd - 5th June. There were nearly 100 people in attendance who enjoyed catching up with old friends and also making new ones. Colin Clinkard of Best Services organised the event and plenty of entertainment throughout the weekend.
The weekend kicked off with a Casino night with everyone getting into the spirit of the evening with people crowding round the Blackjack, Stud Poker & Roulette tables! Joe Ellwood (Furse) won the most chips and was presented with a bottle of champagne.
On Friday morning guests gathered outside the hotel and, with the sun shining, they boarded the coach to Holker Hall which was hosting an annual Garden Festival. The next stop was Haverthwaite railway station where guests boarded a steam train for the journey to Lakeside; for those of a certain age the smells and sounds on the journey brought back memories of steam rail journeys long ago! Later in the afternoon, with the sun still shining, everyone enjoyed the beautiful scenery drift by during a leisurely cruise of Lake Windermere.
The AGM, chaired by ATLAS President Graeme Fisher, took place on Saturday morning with a very high attendance of ATLAS members. Highlights of the meeting included the election of the ATLAS Officers and a debate regarding Health & Safety.
Clay Pigeon shooting was the activity of choice on Saturday afternoon where ladies and gents, including some who had never fired a gun before, had a great afternoon. The competition was won by James Taylor (A N Wallis).
The President’s dinner began with a champagne reception on the hotel lawn before moving to the dining room where guests enjoyed an excellent dinner with fine wines. The highlight of the night was when the extended family of Honorary Life Vice President, John Richardson, appeared at the dinner – much to his surprise – to help him celebrate his 80th birthday. The President’s speech touched on the sad loss of two Honorary Life Vice Presidents, Bert Bird and Alan Bacon, when tribute was paid to them both and their contribution to ATLAS and their industry.
